World War 2 Deutsch Camera

Sunday, June 17th, 2007

So much history behind the lens of this moment-capturing-device. More about Zeiss.

According to my friend (the current owner of this camera, it’s a camera used during WW2). The camera is entirely mechanical-operated (no need for batteries). Nothing fancy in terms of technology, but the workmanship is excellent. For features like setting the shutter speed and self-timer shooting, there’s a lever somewhere, not unlike a conventional jackpot machine.

I can imagine the countless blood spill and bullets viewed thru this lens. Maybe one strayed bullet hit the original owner and probably that’s how the camera end up here.

A very interesting piece of yesteryear’s technology.

Royal Mulu’s Bridge

Wednesday, May 23rd, 2007

With my Mulu caves trip still fresh in mind, here’s something I’ve sketched up during the trip. It’s a bridge connecting the Royal Mulu Resort with the other side of the river.

Oh yeah, speaking of Royal Mulu, thanks to Renga, who managed to get us a good price for the spa package!

Back from Mt Kinabalu!

Kinabalu Rest
Finally conquered the highest peak in Borneo Island. It wasn’t an easy feat, since the entire team almost didn’t get to reach the summit due to rainy weather. The freezing temperature is the most challenging element of the entire ascent.

Nevertheless, it’s a very good experience to be standing at the top of Low’s Peak for a few minutes before the chilling wind made it impossible to stay a minute longer.

Will be actively posting again after I adapt myself back to the altitude. It’s tempting to post the incredible pictures taken during the journey to the summit, but I guess I will leave it to another post in the near future.

Going Up!

Friday, July 14th, 2006

Will be leaving for Mount Kinabalu in a few hours time.

Of course, am hoping to get some nice shot from above the clouds and if luck permits, a real life shot of a Rafflesia.
So, don’t expect any new posts in the coming week.

See y’all in a week’s time!

Piggy Banks

[QUICKTIME http://www.meshio.com/img/2006/piggy_banks.mov 316 257]

The same crowd technology (Massive) that was used to power Sauron’s evil herds in LOTR is used on these little piggies from Bank of New Zealand. Nice way of conveying a serious subject with cute characters!

According to Scoop’s report…

The success of the piggy bank commercials is described by AdMedia?? David Gapes as a ??mash hit??, unprecedented in the history of the survey. ??n the five years we??e been running this survey there?? never been an ad that has achieved the number one position on debut.

Maybe someone can take this idea and pull off a rollercoaster CG short to represent an investment firm.

Creativity Trance

Saturday, April 8th, 2006

Was cleaning up my desk this evening when I saw my Wacom tablet in one of the drawers, piled under a huge stack of paper and documents. I took it up and wipe off the dusty surface and plug it into my Thinkpad.

As some of you who knew me personally, I have always had the urge to scribble on any surface if only I am given a pencil. Looking at the idling Wacom table, it took me a while to gather back my thoughts before I decide it’s time to polish my skills.

And off I went into a trance of artistic creativity…

I have been wanting to design a mascot for www.meshio.com. And so off I went with the first stroke. Splat!

Artistic Trance in Progress

Thoughout the process, I am still able to come up with the character rather spontaneously, but I can feel that there’s abit of rustiness in the strokes. Nevertheless, you be the judge.

It took me about an hour to finish this character. I haven’t have a name for it yet. This character has been derived from the sandy sea turtle that is believed to be the longest living creature on Earth. There’s a reason why I pick the turtle instead of dolphins, jellyfish or star fish. Will disclose more in the future.

Also, I hope with the addition of this mascot, I will be able to explain some of the financial terms and concepts in a more entertaining manner, something along the line of pictorial guidebook or illustrative financial companion. I have seen a book that explained non-household financial terms like real rate of interest, correlation coefficients, inflation and standard deviation using comic as the delivery medium, and it sure does helps to sustain the reader’s interest and attention with the nice artwork. Hence, the inspiration to create this character as a starting point for this blog.

And now, back to cleaning up the desk…
