Report on Last Year’s Run

I hope this year there will be more active attempts by the organizers and the benefiting institutions to spread the awareness on cancer. For the past 2 years, I can only notice the Milo van being the most successful post-run attraction. There is very minimal effort on spreading awareness and information on cancer education.

Getting everyone to run is one thing, getting everyone to understand why they are running is another. For the informed runners who already knew about Terry Fox and his battle for cancer, they probably already know why they are running. What about the children from the younger generation, who will be tagging along with their parents for the run?

Organizers, time to go the extra mile (pun definitely intended)!

How much effort has been done by Carif to help cancer patients? Why it remains as the only designated beneficial every year? Why the receipt of T-shirt purchase is not official? I decided to join the Run this year without buying the T-Shirt until my question answered?

This made me thinking… The receipt was not official. The receipt looks like it came out from a generic receipt book that can be easily bought from any stationery store. There weren't any official Terry Fox stamp on the receipt as well. And where are our official tax return receipt which they promised to send to us when we purchased our T-shirts? I won't be buying the T-shirt this year too!!! Terry Fox Run Organizers or the designated beneficiary must answer to all the runners who support the run every year!

On behalf of the Terry Fox Run Organisng Committee KL 2009, I thank you for your questions and I am glad to address them accordingly.

Benefactor: The Terry Fox Run Organising Committee has no power over the benefactor selection. All cancer research facilities proposed as benefactors are screened and approved by the Terry Fox Foundation in Canada. Research protocol, annual research reports and other supporting document are submitted to the foundation in Canada. CARIF fulfills these requirements. Any cancer research facility wishing to apply to be a benefactor is welcome to apply for such consideration.

Account:Account for each run is audited by an external accountant, PricewaterhouseCoopers and submitted to the Terry Fox Foundation in Canada. All receipt stubs are part of the audit process.

Receipts: The benefactor will issue tax exemption receipt for small purchases (under 10 t shirts) only upon request. The Organising Committee apologizes for any oversight on our end due to the large number of small purchases. We will look into a more effective process to overcome this issue.

Cancer Awareness and Information: The Terry Fox Run Foundation has very stringent rules which limit the scope of information disseminated through The Terry Fox Run related activities. The Organising Committee’s function is to educate the public about Terry Fox and raise awareness only for the run. This is crucial to negate any potential confusion of Terry Fox Run being connected with any specific type of cancer. Public is welcome to contact other qualified institutions for cancer related information.

Once again, thank you for your continuous support。Do write in to organizer@terryfoxrunkl.org if you have further enquiries regarding the The Terry Fox Run. Look forward to see you at the run.

Is there a booth in 1U for us to get these t-shirts like last year?

    “CARIF fulfills these requirements”

Ask any cancer patients what has Carif done so far?

“All receipt stubs are part of the audit process.”

This does not answer to this issues brought up: The receipt looks like it came out from a generic receipt book that can be easily bought from any stationery store. There weren't any official Terry Fox stamp on the receipt as well.'

“The Organising Committee apologizes for any oversight on our end due to the large number of small purchases.”

The organising committee are mainly run by Carif. Isn't this creates conflict of interest? How Carif fullfills the TFR requirement if this can't even be managed properly?

“The Organising Committee's function is to educate the public about Terry Fox and raise awareness only for the run. This is crucial to negate any potential confusion of Terry Fox Run being connected with any specific type of cancer.”

It would be a real confusion if runner do not know the main purpose of running!

    Dear Yien,
Your assertion the committee is mainly run by CARIF is incorrect. Please note, there are volunteers from CARIF that are members of the committee, that is a fact. There are also member including a separate, non-related chairperson, High commission staff, members from several other businesses.

As for the receipts, there has never been advice or issues of problems from the tax office when corporate contributors or individuals claim. While this may not address your desire to have a better looking receipt, the main objective of being a tax claim is met.

The aim of the run is well publicized and can be noticed prior to and after the run by listening to some of the public service announcements, reading newspaper articles to support the run and periodic TV reporting on the success of the run in Malaysia. Please remember, the purpose of the run is to not only raise awareness of cancer (not one specific type) but that the funds rasied are used for cancer research, not cancer treatment.

The committee in KL goes to great lengths to promote at schools, shopping centers and capitalizing on the word of mouth from particpants from previous runs.

Dear Yien, you obviously are passionate about this cause and that being the case, you should consider offering your time as a volunteer or committee member. Your ideas and contribution to make the Terry Fox Run in KL grow and flourish even more would be applauded. If you are interested, please speak to one of the hundreds of volunteers or the Committee Chairperson at the run.

Thank you so much for trying to make the Terry Fox Run in KL a better event.
