Guide to Smart Insurance Planning for Malaysians

The Malaysia Insurance Planning Guide Book Cover

UPDATE: The book is now available in 2 formats- the Print Edition and the PDF electronic book edition.

A brief excerpt from the preface:

This guide has been written to inform you about the different types of insurance which are available for the average Malaysian and how you can go about planning your risk management. In this Guide, I have used the terms ‘insurance agent’, ‘representative’, ‘insurance advisor’ and ‘insurance intermediary’ interchangeably.

It is becoming a trend that insurance representatives are trained to move up the value chain not just by providing investment products to their clients, but also by assisting them with their financial planning needs. In its effort to move towards becoming a more customer-centric and advisory oriented industry, the Malaysia insurance industry is ensuring that its agency force is prepared for such a drastic change in their job scope. In the future, terms such as ‘life planners’, ‘financial advisers’ and ‘risk management consultants’ will be very common. Some common insurance types are not covered here, such as motor insurance, burglary insurance, house owner insurance, travel insurance, mortgage reducing term assurance (MRTA) and professional indemnity insurance.

I have opted to narrow the scope of my guide to include only insurance that has direct impact on the daily life of an average individual. Concepts such as business continuity insurance and key man insurance are not discussed here, either. Takaful, which is insurance that uses the Islamic banking concept (muamalat) will not be included in the discussion either.

“Towards the end of the ebook, YowChuan tell us the truth about the critical years tragedy. Critical years is used to be highly marketted as the main feature of a life insurance plan. The only reason people hesitate to get insured is thinking about the premium that they need to pay regularly.

If insurance agents can take away the worry about premium payment, or make it as short as possible, life insurance policy will be a very attractive product. But nowadays, critical years are no longer preached because it was banned by the authorities.”
