This evening, I walked out of my usual hair salon with a very disturbing thought. I tried to recapture what the receptionist said to me over the counter, as I handed her the payment.
Receptionist said, “This month’s rate is RM 25, extra RM 5 because it’s the Chinese New Year season. After this, the rate is back to RM 20 again.”
Staring blankly at her and not knowing what to say, I begin to wonder what has Chinese New Year got to do with trimming hair?
After failing to connect the two events, I decidedly concluded that it might just be an act of daylight robbery happening everywhere nationwide in Chinese hair salons at this time of the month. A temporary 25% price increase, at the time you need it most. Sounds like a typical Chinese businessman practice- milking the most out of you when you are in your most vulnerable state.
I am starting to miss the old barber back in my hometown, where I got my haircut since I start going to school. (sob sob!)
