Okie, I may not have preached my political views very often here at this blog. If you are above 21 years old, I urge you to register yourself at the post office nearest to the address on your Identification Card.
I was pondering on this whole thing about democracy, where the citizens of a country is given the rights to vote for their own government. Fair and equal, eh?
The government that gets voted is the political party with the majority of the votes. It’s so easy to see how you can abuse such a system, for instance, loosening up citizenship whereby these “citizens” will then vote for the respective government who granted them their citizenship.
Okie, here’s what i think would be an ideal democracy- a “weighted democracy”, where a citizen’s right to vote is based on their contribution to the country, for example, the amount of tax they contributed or some form of measurable merit system. Why I’d think tax is a good metric to measure the weight of a voter? Think of it like the stockholding in a company, where the more shares you hold, the more rights you have to approve or disapprove a policy-in-making. Similarly, the more tax you contribute to a country’s pool of fund, shouldn’t you gain more say in what the government do with your money?
What other metrics can you think of? Donation of monies and time to charitable causes that helps the welfare of the people of this country? Should winning a Nobel Prize gives an individual more weight in casting his/her vote? On the same note, should individuals involved in corruption or the abused of public funds while in government office be penalized by reducing their vote’s weighting?
Well, that’s just a short rant of my simple-minded political bird brain. I just don’t feel democracy works in every country without proper “customizations”.
While I do not foresee any major political reforms in this country, I still feel total obligations and responsibility to exercise my rights as a valid citizen who was born on this very soil.
