Roadworthy

With the recent bus tragedy that made headlines in local dailies, I can’t help but wonder how many of the road users out there are truly roadworthy.

How many of us bought our way through the driving schools? It’s so common for us to hear about “guaranteed” packages offered by driving schools. Don’t the authorities realized that a moving vehicle is very much like a weapon and could easily be used as a killing machine.

How many of us committed traffic offenses and managed to bribe our way through? If we can get away with our offenses easily, it’s pointless to have any form of enforcements.

It’s all too easy to blame the drivers and public transport companies for these tragedies, but nobody points the finger on the system that produces incompetent road users.

Maybe it’s easy to ignore something that we do not see and understand. And what can we do to avoid these tragedies from happening again?

Maybe these can help:

1) driver demerit points (but again, it’s not the weakness of the policy, but of the enforcers)
2) drivers that got into an accident should re-take their license again
3) higher NCD for safe drivers, currently the maximum is only 55%
4) compulsory to stick a sticker saying how many accidents you have been involved in at the bumper of every car, possibly stating how many “kills” you made

My consolation goes to the family members who lost their loved ones in the 13th August tragedy.
