EPF: More Money for Education

Other than just easier admittance to higher learning institutions, the fees are also increasing consistently every year, at the rate of 6-8% a year. That’s why when you enquire about the cost, they will tell you the rates are revised every year due to “inflationary purposes” :-(

The Employees Provident Fund (EPF) approved 20,273 applications to withdraw savings for educational purposes during the first six months of the year, up by 39.7% over the same period last year.

It involved a withdrawal for a total of RM118.5mil from RM65.3mil in the same period last year, EPF chief executive officer Datuk Azlan Zainol said in a statement yesterday.

He attributed the increase to EPF’s move to expand the withdrawal for education to also cover courses at diploma and higher levels as well as the increase in the number of new student intakes by institutions of higher learning.

He said the EPF received subscriptions totalling RM16.6bil between January and June this year, an increase of 18.2% from the same period last year.
