Automobile Warranties

That’s why I have always welcome competition. When you have a monopolized industry, consumer suffers and that’s not good for the economy.

GM to the World…

GM says all its 2007 vehicles will come with a five-year, 100,000-mile warranty that covers the so-called power train–engine, transmission and other parts that move the car from point A to point B. Moreover, the warranty goes with the car–even if it’s sold.

A long-term warranty is not a new idea, and it has a mixed record. Hyundai began offering a ten-year 100,000 mile warranty when its cars were still punch lines to bad quality jokes, and the plan helped spur a meteoric rise in sales. DaimlerChrysler’s (nyse: DCX news people ) Chrysler Group later followed with a 70,000-mile warranty, to no discernible effect on sales whatsoever.

I wonder how would Proton benchmarked against such quality assurance. Let’s take a quick look. According to EON’s policy:-

The basic warranty items that are any items of the new PROTON vehicle (except the Specific items and the Special transacted items*) are warranted to 24 months or 50,000 kms, whichever comes first.
That’s only about 31,068.56 miles.

The specific warranty items listed below are warranted to 12 months or 20,000 kms, whichever comes first.

(i) Battery (for Diesel – 6 months)
(ii) Exhaust
(iii) Injection nozzle for diesel powered vehicle
(iv) Glow plug for diesel powered vehicle

Oops, commonly-malfunction accessories has got lower and shorter warranty period- smart. We (the Malaysian proton consumers) are so short-changed. Comparatively, Proton drivers in UK enjoy better warranty than the citizens who are patriotic enough to be driving the national car, ouch!

Excerpt from UK’s Proton website…

All Proton vehicles (except the GEN-2 1.3 LE) have 3 year/ 60,000 mile total vehicle warranty and 3 years free RAC cover.
