Price of consumer goods raised to an all-time high this year in July to 4.1%, and is expected to ease for the second half of the year, citing that the recent electricity tariff hike as insignificant. We’ll see about that…
Inflation rate expected to ease
INFLATION rate as measured by the annual change in the consumer price index (CPI) rose to 4.1% in July from 3.9% in May and June. This was largely in line with the market?? expectations. The inflation rate was reflected in higher food and non-alcoholic beverage prices.
Most economists expect the CPI growth will ease in the remaining months of 2006, implying an average inflation rate of 3.3%-3.6% for the second half of 2006, lower than the first half?? 3.9%, suggesting that the pass-through effect from the power tariff hike in June was insignificant.
