Intention from a Chinese Character Perspective

The word intention, as defined by thefreedictionary.com ???? course of action that one intends to follow.??

There’s something else I would like to elaborate on “intention” when it’s written in one of the planet’s oldest ideograms.

Intention in Chinese Character: Nian4

The character above, pronounced ??strong>nian4??, is made up of 2 distinct characters.

The top one is pronounced “jin1“. This character carries the meaning “present“.

The bottom character is pronounced as “xin1“, which means “heart“.

So, the word intention in Chinese would literally mean the state of your heart at the present moment, which is pretty much what intention really is. Intention, good or bad, could be summoned in our mind in a spark of a moment, and that’s when it really matters. You don’t really have to translate that intention into physical equivalent but just having the thought of it makes you “it” at that particular point of time.

That’s why, a prolonged intention is important to enable us to direct ourselves towards the goal we’ve set. For instance, if we are looking at becoming financially independent by age 40, we must carry this intention with us all the time so that we are constantly striving towards that direction.

Bad intentions, unfortunately works the same way. If we condition ourselves to constantly think of unconstructive thoughts, such as how to take advantage of others in realizing our objectives, we will do exactly that! If you think poverty, you might just get it!

That’s why it’s often said that the human mind is a very dangerous tool, because it can conceive what it believes. Your present state of mind (read: intention) works as accurate as the best fortuneteller around; there’s no need to read up on today’s horoscopes or check out the stars formation.

So, be very careful what your intention, although nobody can read your mind, but it will translate into your action somehow, whether you are conscious about it or not.

Your intention is powerful enough to alter the formation of stars (you actually believed that?)
