Great Eastern (M) Berhad just launched the first ever International Scholar Education Fund. Why must all the marketing people use “First” as the differentiating factor when launching something new? First this, first that…are they really running out of good copywriters or is “First” and “Free!” the only few keywords that captures Malaysian’s eyeballs? Now, tell me what it does, other than being FIRST!
GIS would be useful to parents planning to send their children for overseas education to popular destinations such as Britain, the US and Australia, he said.??he fund is denominated in ringgit converted into the British pound, the US dollar and the Australian dollar. It is hard to predict how currencies’ trends would pan out over such long period, but we believe it gives investors a hedge over currency fluctuations,?? Foong told a media conference after the launch yesterday.

In short, it’s an investment-linked policy that invest off-shore. Well, it’s something new, considering that most education plans are usually traditional endowment policies. With investment-linked education plans, you are trading off for higher return at higher risk. There’s no free lunch.
Depending on your appetite, you might want to allocate your kid’s education budget according to the risks you can take. It’s sometimes a good idea to allocate some investment in mutual fund so your money can work harder, though mutual fund doesn’t comes with the protection and guaranteed returns as compared to an endowment facility.
I have also heard of parents who invest in properties hoping for it to appreciate while they can collect rental from it. I am not saying this is not as good as a “black-and-white plan”, unless you are a darn good property broker, there are just too much risks you are taking up over the long period of time.
Again, only you know best about how much risk you can take.
Rule of thumb: Invest your money in a place where you have the most knowledge or seek professional help. Don’t do it just because someone else is doing it!
