Surfing at Work Can Get You Fired!

Well, I know of many companies here in Malaysia who practice “no-surfing” or “limited-surfing” policies. Some companies only allowed IM (instant-messaging) with built-in archiving features so that your boss can check out the mushy-mushy stuff you’ve been chatting with his secretary.

I sincerely agree with Shel Holtz, if things are getting done on time and delivered with quality, why complain?

Shel on surfing at work…

It?? an absurd number that defies logic, since it does not account for the hours spent at home engaged in work activities or the number of hours these employees spend at the office beyond the required eight hours.

What is your take?

  • I completely support surfing as long as there's no effect on your work!
  • I can't imagine working without internet connection.

Nevertheless, check out this article on Relentless studio.

It seem that they ban surfing at work, but justify that rule by keeping overtimes to minimal, and keeping the work hours to 9-5.

Surfing at work is necessary if you rely on the MSDN or some other code samples/ways of doing things.

I use to work in a company where the programmers have to manually go to a station with PC and dial up, and account for how much time they spent there if they want materials such as code, documentation and etc to complete a task.

This is nonsense. I did not tolerate such BS and I didnt stick around for long.

Internet access is necessary in our line of jobs, but we must have self discipline and control.

Trying to babysit developers by cutting off the internet access and making them go to a station dedicated for it is ridiculous especially when there's not enough and everyone else needs to use it too.

The key is discipline and professionalism in controlling your surfing habits at work.

Eventually, as long as you get the job done on time, there really should not be any hindrance to internet access which could help improve your knowledge. We programmers need internet access and participations in some forums so we can gain knowledge and shared from others, and also to contribute in return.
