I am not sure how many of you out there are full-time freelancers. Freelancing is just another term for self-employment, but as a freelancer, the term is used more often in the design/coding/writing industry. Freelancing also usually mean it’s operated at home, SOHO style. This reduces many unnecessary overheads such as transportation, traveling time and renting an extra office.
Full time freelancer Cameron Moll has got her side of the story to share as she strikes out on her own:
- Err on the side of abundant contact
- Care for the future
- Care for the present
- Avoid Monday deadlines
- Be cautious responding to emails outside business hours
- Say ‘no’ as often as you say ‘yes’
- Make project expenses justify themselves
- Beware the inevitable check delay
- Be chummy with your point of contact
- Don’t leap without solid footing
Part-time freelancers or “moonlighters” can also learn something from the tips above so you can quickly quit your job and go full time!
