Are you a freelance designer or a computer graphics artist that is always wondering what is the appropriate rate you should be charging your clients for your service?
Over at Tortorella Design, Neil Tortorella shares with us the way he would go about calculating the cost and expenses that would be involved in a typical project.

However, I have come to know about some freelancers who’ve never had the slightest idea what their pricing are. They usually end up over-charging just to be on the safe side. This usually means they don’t get the project or they give amazing 50% discount after negotiating with the clients, which in the end makes them look very unprofessional). Some under-charged, and once the project starts, they start swearing and cursing why did they took the project in the first place anyway.

Well, my take is, like any other “professional” industry, your rate should be properly stated according to the tasks at hand and must not consist of ambigous figures which are simply added.
Your professional rate should also become more consistent as you work on more on projects, since you should know the degree of complexity, the amount of time needed to accomplish the task and also what are the possible extra charges which might be involved.
Of course, the “calculator” he shared is based on the US working environment. If you are a Malaysian freelancer you might need to do a bit of tweaking.
