MLM: Multi Level Marketing or More Losing Money

I am not targeting any specific company this time. I have been wondering the viability of investing in a MLM company and why so many of my friends have got war stories to share about it, if they are even willing to share with me in the first place. It’s not that I am going to put any bucks down in a MLM company, it’s just that I am really concerned at the rate people are getting conned out there.

I am have also been “cordially invited” to some of these amazing business opportunities seminars. It’s the same old stuff, just different speakers/slides/hotel ballrooms.
I am also aware that some people who lost their hard earn savings to these scams are too embarassed to speak publicly about it. Instead of covering up for these scamming ventures, if you have been unrightfully scammed, the least you can do is to let the people around you be aware of it, lest they fell for the same trick.

Still, to stereotype all MLM or network marketing companies into Con Artist Inc. would be unfair and does not seek to solve the situation.

Robert L. Fitzpatrick on the Ten Big Lies of MLM:

Lie #1: MLM offers better opportunities than all other conventional business and professional models for making large amounts of money.

Lie #2: Network marketing is the most popular and effective new way to bring products to market. Consumers like to buy products on a one-to-one basis in the MLM model.

Lie #3: Eventually all products will be sold by MLM. Retail stores, shopping malls, catalogs and most forms of advertising will soon be rendered obsolete by MLM.

Lie #4: MLM is a new way of life that offers happiness and fulfillment. It provides a way to attain all the good things in life.

Lie #5: MLM is a spiritual movement.

Lie #6: Success in MLM is easy. Friends and relatives are the natural prospects. Those who love and support you will become your life-time customers.

Lie #7: You can do MLM in your spare time. As a business, it offers the greatest flexibility and personal freedom of time. A few hours a week can earn a significant supplemental income and may grow to a very large income, making other work unnecessary.

Lie #8: MLM is a positive, supportive new business that affirms the human spirit and personal freedom.

Lie #9: MLM is the best option for owning your own business and attaining real economic independence.

Lie #10: MLM is not a pyramid scheme because products are sold.

Well, it’s up to you really on deciding the truths on MLM. I have seen people making a decent living out of it without resorting to any scams or tricks.

However, no matter what business ventures you decide to put your money into, just make sure you do your homework on the company or the management team. I am surprised to hear that some people invest just because their friends are investing in it, without even finding out what it is they are investing.

Consult the people you can trust when it comes to business dealings and investment opportunities (they’ve probably been through all the scams).

Remember, it’s your money that is at stake here, and ONLY YOU are 100% responsible for the losses made.

I unfortuantely have a few friends that have recently falllen for MLM schemes... Notably Agel and NuSkin. They seem to be mushrooming here in Israel.

Note that I say scheme and not scam... My friends recieved the products that they paid for, unfortunately I don't think that anyone even made back their initial buy-in fee, much less actually make anything!

Like my daddy taught me, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

If you don't know what are you doing, the risk is coming.
I don't think MLM is a easy business yet i'm not deny it as great business model.
The important things about MLM is your selection & attitude. If we want to be in this business, be brace yourself to accept a lot of rejections, critic, trouble etc.
  • There are always bad apples, and always bad people within organizations. Though the company themselves may be legit, the people recruiting you into their downline could be complete scum - so know what you're getting into.
  • Great post. I will have to bookmark this website to read more.
  • This list is not all lies. It depends upon the person who is into MLM that makes it a lie in some aspects.
