Punch Cards

I met with Jason yesterday night for a round of mamak. This dude is a programmer, and a very talented one. And he told me that his company uses punch cards at work. Yeah, the good old machine that draws a red line in your card when you are LATE!

I wonder how many IT companies out there still uses punch cards in their organizations, either for storage or for attendance reporting.

These IT companies must be facing extinction soon. I don’t understand how professionals can be treated like factory workers, but I guess Jason has nothing to complain. The female colleagues apparently uses the same punch-in-punch-out system, and he gets to jot down their names from the cards easily. Lucky him!

Come to think of it, my current company also uses a card system to open the doors. This card system also actually logs the time you knock in and bail out. Hmm… so I think it’s pretty much another punch-card system in modern disguise.

I actually like punch cards… no ambiguity over ‘working hours’. It’s clear, firm, and constant. In at 9, out at 5 :)
