Creative Resignations

For the past few years I’ve been in the working society, I always felt that the most difficult thing to master is not the technology, the skill of the trade, the craftmanship, the salesmanship or what-have-you-ship, but rather the culture of an organisation. So in this short post, I would like to divulge into the observations I have made on the usage of resignations. Yes, you heard me right, resignations can be used in various context in order to get different results. So let’s start dissecting the various usages.

1) Resignation for the Determined.

Okie, these are the normal resignations. People who resign with this method has a variety of reasons to resign. The main point of them leaving can be attributed to a variety of reasons. However, they all share a common trait- they are DETERMINED. No matter what counter offers or sweetie talks, these people are not moved, not touched and not disillusioned. They just want to leave the place for good

2) Resignation for the Gamblers.

In this category, we can see that Gamblers resign in order to get a raise, to get promoted or to get an edge over their co-workers.

Why are these people called the Gamblers? These are a bunch of people who are pretty smart with their bets. They know that their increment after appraisal is either unattractive or is a long time to come, or they have just innocently open up their colleague’s pay slip and realized that they are underpaid by RM 10.00. So, what they will do is go for interviews to secure a good offer, then throw in the towel. And the dice starts rolling. If the management counter offers with something better, they will stay. Thus, the Gamblers is said to have won “with distinction” in this case. To ensure this works, the gamblers must ensure that they are positioned indispensably well in the organisation. When this happens, they get a raise, and are normally promoted.

So what if the plan fails? The Gamblers still win in the situation, but they don’t get a distinction. They will only get a pay raise in another company. Either way, they will most likely be doing this for a few more times to achieve the pay level they want.

I am sure there are many other reasons on why people resigns. If you happened to know any of them, drop me a note so I can include them in the compilation.

  • I work for job satisfaction. I left my previous job end of feb this year (n i still dont hv a job) because it just wasn't challenging enough and there wasn't enough demands to develop and improve. I hate getting stuck doing something that gets me nowhere... whether its salary wise or skill. There must always be improvement and the challenge of doing something new or better.
